Where should we go for 3-4 days after visiting the Cotswolds?
We’re planning a few days in the Cotswolds and want to explore the surrounding areas for an additional 3-4 days (we’ll have a car). I’m considering Bath or Oxford as potential destinations. Do you have any other recommendations? Also, what are some must-see sights to check out during our travels from one location to another?
We’re an American family currently based near Durham for a few years, so we’ll have opportunities for more exploration. This will be our first visit to the Cotswolds.
Thanks in advance for your suggestions!
That sounds like an exciting trip! Both Bath and Oxford are excellent choices, but there are also a few more options to consider for a 3-4 day adventure after the Cotswolds.
Bath: A must-visit with its stunning Roman Baths, the picturesque Georgian architecture, and the beautiful Royal Crescent. Don’t miss the Thermae Bath Spa for a relaxing day out. While in Bath, take a walk along the Avon River and visit the Pulteney Bridge.
Oxford: Known for its prestigious university, Oxford boasts beautiful colleges, the Ashmolean Museum, and the Bodleian Library. The city’s cobbled streets are lovely for wandering, and you can take a scenic boat ride on the river.
Stratford-upon-Avon: Just a short drive from the Cotswolds, Stratford is famous as the birthplace of William Shakespeare. Visit the Shakespeare Theatre, his childhood home, and explore the town’s charming streets.
Blenheim Palace: Located near Woodstock, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is the birthplace of Winston Churchill and features stunning gardens and impressive architecture. It’s a great stop between Oxford and the Cotswolds.
Cheltenham: Known for its Regency architecture and beautiful gardens, Cheltenham is a great place for shopping and dining. If you love horse racing, check out the Racecourse if you’re there during the season.
Wells: As England’s smallest city, Wells is home to a stunning cathedral and the picturesque Bishop’s Palace. It’s a lovely spot for exploring on foot.
The Mendip Hills: If you enjoy hiking, the Mendip Hills offer beautiful landscapes and great trails. Visit Cheddar Gorge for stunning views and explore the famous caves.
Itinerary Suggestions:
– Day 1: Cotswolds to Bath. Explore the Roman Baths and stroll the city.
– Day 2: Bath to Wells in the morning for a visit and then head to Cheddar Gorge for some hiking or sightseeing.
– Day 3: Wells to Stratford-upon-Avon; explore Shakespeare’s attractions.
– Day 4: Stratford to Oxford; visit the university and enjoy the scenic city.
Having a car provides great flexibility to explore these places at your leisure. Enjoy your trip!
