Is this a realistic travel plan for Wales?

Is this a feasible travel itinerary for Wales?

After receiving some feedback a few days ago, we’ve decided to spend around seven days in Wales (not counting travel days) exploring both the North and South regions. We’re trying to figure out the best way to plan our trip, as we’re coming from the US.

Here’s our current plan: we’ll fly into Cardiff and spend about 3-4 days in the south. We’d like to explore the city and then take a day to visit the southwestern area, likely Pembroke. After our time in the south, we’ll drive up to the north, where we’ll spend the remainder of our trip before heading back to Cardiff Airport.

I know it might sound odd starting in the south, driving north, and then returning south, but this route is primarily for coordinating our flights and accommodation. If anyone has suggestions for a more efficient approach, I’d love to hear them!

Additionally, which areas deserve extra time? What cities should we consider for our hotel bases in the north and south? I’m currently thinking of staying near Conwy in the north and in Cardiff in the south.

Thanks in advance for your help—a bewildered American!

  1. Your travel plan sounds quite feasible for a week in Wales! While it’s true that driving from Cardiff to North Wales and then back down again seems a bit roundabout, it’s a common approach for travelers wanting to experience both regions. Here are some thoughts to help refine your plan:

    Itinerary Suggestions:

    1. South Wales (3-4 Days)
    2. Cardiff: Spend a day or two exploring the capital. Don’t miss Cardiff Castle, the beautiful waterfront at Cardiff Bay, and the vibrant local food scene.
    3. Pembrokeshire: Dedicate a day to Pembrokeshire National Park, particularly the coastal areas like Tenby or St Davids. If you enjoy outdoor activities, you could consider a hike or a boat trip to see the islands.

    4. North Wales (3-4 Days)

    5. Conwy: Staying in Conwy is a great choice! Its medieval castle is a highlight, and it’s close to other attractions. You can explore the narrow streets and enjoy waterfront views.
    6. Snowdonia: Consider dedicating a day to Snowdonia National Park. If you’re up for it, hiking Mount Snowdon is a popular activity, but there are also plenty of scenic drives if you’d prefer to take it easy.
    7. Bangor or Llandudno: Both are good bases for exploring the coast and accessing other cities like Caernarfon (famous for its castle).

    Additional Tips:

    • Driving Distance: The drive from Cardiff to Conwy will take about 4-5 hours, so plan accordingly, possibly using the day to make scenic stops along the way, such as in Brecon Beacons or at the picturesque town of Llangollen.

    • Accommodation: Booking in town centers can help you access attractions easily. In Cardiff, look for hotels near the city center, and in North Wales, Conwy or Llandudno offer good access to the surrounding area.

    • Alternative Plans: If you’re looking to avoid backtracking, you might consider flying into Cardiff and out of Liverpool, or another nearby airport if that helps coordinate your travel better.

    Areas to Spend More Time:

    • Cardiff: A minimum of two days is great to truly soak in the city atmosphere.
    • Snowdonia: This rugged beauty is worth spending longer if you enjoy hiking or outdoor adventure.

Ultimately, your plan sounds well thought out for a first visit to Wales! Just remember to leave a little flexibility in your schedule so you can enjoy the unexpected charms along the way. Safe travels!
