Can I travel with a JP passport since my UK is expired

Can I travel to Ireland with my Japanese passport if my UK passport is expired?

Hi everyone! I’m planning a trip to Ireland (the Republic of Ireland, not Northern Ireland) next week and just realized my UK passport expired at the beginning of this month. Unfortunately, I don’t have enough time to renew it. However, I do hold a valid Japanese passport since my mother is Japanese.

Can I travel to Ireland using my Japanese passport? If I do, will I face any issues returning to the UK without a valid UK passport? I also have a UK provisional driving license—could I use that to confirm my UK residency? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

  1. You should be able to travel to Ireland using your valid Japanese passport, as long as you don’t have any specific visa requirements to enter Ireland. Japan is on the list of countries whose citizens can enter Ireland without needing a visa for short stays.

Regarding returning to the UK, it’s important to note that as a British citizen, you have the right to return. However, UK border officials may expect you to present a valid UK passport when re-entering. Since your UK passport is expired, this could lead to complications. The UK provisional driving licence may help to establish your identity, but it is not a substitute for a passport when it comes to re-entry.

It might be a good idea to contact UK border authorities or check their website for specific guidance on re-entering the UK without a valid passport. Additionally, ensure that you have any other forms of identification or documentation that confirm your UK citizenship.

If you have the option, consider carrying any other documents that prove your British nationality, such as a birth certificate, in case you need to clarify your citizenship upon return.

    Safe travels!
