Planning on going to Scotland from London in the Summer

I’m excited to be visiting Scotland for the first time this summer! I have around 8 days to explore and I’m passionate about nature and photography. I’ve got my eye on some key spots like the Isle of Skye, Ben Nevis, Inverness, Edinburgh, and Glasgow. Are there any other must-see locations I should consider?

Also, would it be better to fly to Inverness and then make my way back to London, or the other way around? How do you recommend traveling—by train or another method? I’d love to hear your thoughts!

  1. That sounds like an amazing trip! Scotland is a photographer’s paradise with its stunning landscapes. Here’s a possible itinerary that might help you make the most of your 8 days:

    Suggested Itinerary

    Day 1: Arrive in Edinburgh
    – Explore the city, visiting Edinburgh Castle, Arthur’s Seat, and the Royal Mile.
    – Capture the beautiful architecture and cityscapes.

    Day 2: Edinburgh to Glasgow
    – Take a train to Glasgow (about 1 hour).
    – Explore Glasgow’s vibrant art scene, including the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and the Riverside Museum.

Day 3: Glasgow to Fort William
    – Rent a car or take a train to Fort William.
    – This would be a good base for visiting Ben Nevis. If you’re up for it, hike to the summit for breathtaking views (weather permitting).

Day 4: Fort William to Isle of Skye
    – Drive to the Isle of Skye (around 2.5 hours).
    – Explore popular spots like the Fairy Pools, Quiraing, and Neist Point Lighthouse for great photography.

    Day 5: Isle of Skye
    – Spend a full day on the Isle of Skye. Visit the Old Man of Storr and Dunvegan Castle.
    – Keep an eye out for local wildlife for some unique shots!

Day 6: Isle of Skye to Inverness
    – Drive to Inverness (about 2 hours).
    – On the way, consider stopovers at Eilean Donan Castle for photos and Loch Ness for some Nessie sightings.

    Day 7: Inverness to Edinburgh
    – Explore Inverness in the morning, then make your way back to Edinburgh (about 3.5 hours drive).
    – You could explore some of the Scottish Highlands en route.

    Day 8: Edinburgh
    – Spend your last day in Edinburgh, visiting any remaining sites or perhaps taking a day trip to places like the Forth Bridges or Stirling Castle.

    Travel Recommendations

    • Car vs. Train: Renting a car will give you more flexibility to explore the scenic routes and hidden gems. However, the train is a relaxing option and offers beautiful views along the way.
    • Flying: If you prefer a quicker start, flying into Inverness is a good option, allowing you to focus on that part of the Highlands first.

    Additional Locations

    • Cairngorms National Park: Incredible landscapes and wildlife.
    • Loch Lomond: Perfect for more stunning photography and outdoor activities.

Make sure to check the weather forecast and go prepared for changing conditions in Scotland! Enjoy your trip—there will be endless photography opportunities!
