Football match recommendations for trip to London/surrounding areas

Football Match Recommendations for Our London Trip

Hey everyone! My friends and I are heading to England from April 18th to April 27th, and as huge football fans, we’re eager to catch as many matches as possible. We’ve already booked games for Saturday the 19th, Sunday the 20th, and Monday the 21st, along with a couple more for the following weekend— all within the London area.

However, we’re still looking for matches on Tuesday the 22nd, Wednesday the 23rd, and Thursday the 24th. I’ve noticed that there are usually National League fixtures on Tuesdays, but is that consistent? What other levels of football typically have games during the week? We’re not picky and just want to soak in the English football culture, even if it means attending semi-professional matches. We’re also open to traveling a few hours outside of London to catch a game.

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated! While I’m here, I’d also love some restaurant suggestions. We can’t wait to explore England!

P.S. If there’s a better subreddit for inquiries about football match schedules, please let me know! Thanks in advance! 😊

  1. That sounds like an incredible trip! It’s great to see your enthusiasm for experiencing English football culture.

Regarding matches on Tuesday the 22nd, Wednesday the 23rd, and Thursday the 24th, you’re correct that there are often National League fixtures scheduled on Tuesdays. It’s not guaranteed, but many clubs in the lower leagues (including League One and League Two) may have midweek matches, especially as the season nears its end in April. Additionally, look into the EFL Trophy or playoff matches that might be scheduled during that time as well.

Here are a few suggestions for games:

    1. National League: As you mentioned, check the fixtures for clubs like Barnet, Bromley, or Wealdstone, which are all relatively close to London. These matches can provide a great local atmosphere.

    2. Lower League Teams: Keep an eye on League One or League Two fixtures, as they often have matches on Tuesdays and even Wednesdays. For instance, check out teams like Charlton Athletic or Leyton Orient.

    3. Semi-Professional: If you’re willing to experience semi-professional football, clubs in the lower divisions of the English football pyramid often have games midweek. Look into teams like Dulwich Hamlet or AFC Wimbledon as they generally have fixtures on those days.

    4. FA Cup or Other Tournaments: Depending on how teams progress in their respective tournaments, there may be FA Cup or knockout matchups during your stay. Stay updated with the cup schedules!

As for traveling outside London, you might consider visiting clubs in nearby areas like:

    • Brentford: They usually have games and are a great club to support.
    • Reading: About an hour from London, they might have midweek fixtures.
    • Oxford United: Also worth checking, with a good football culture.

For restaurant recommendations, here are a few to check out:

    1. Dishoom: A popular Bombay-style café great for breakfast or lunch.
    2. Sketch: An iconic spot for a more upscale dining experience.
    3. Brick Lane: For a vibrant atmosphere and fantastic curry options.
    4. Pizzeria Da Michele: For some of the best pizza in town.
    5. Gordon Ramsay’s Pub & Grill: Experience classic British pub food.

You might want to check the r/soccer subreddit for match schedules and updates as well, as it’s a great community for detailed football discussions.

Enjoy your trip and the matches! English football culture is an experience you won’t forget.
