Customs at LHR

Customs at LHR
Hi everyone! I’m seeking some clarification regarding the arrival process at London Heathrow (LHR). I’ll be arriving this week from the US on a United flight. I’ve come across information about a specific gate where you can scan your passport and use facial recognition for entry, but I’m not sure where to find that. Additionally, since I have been approved for a UK ETA, will they need to verify that as well? From what I’ve gathered, it seems there’s no interaction required with a customs agent. Any insights would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!
Hi there! Welcome to the UK! When you arrive at Heathrow (LHR), you’ll typically go through the automated e-gates for passport control if you have a biometric passport and you’ve been accepted for the UK ETA. The e-gates are usually located after you clear immigration, and they will use facial recognition technology to match your face to your passport.
Regarding the UK ETA, make sure you have your approval handy, as it may be checked by the customs agents if necessary, even though most passengers can go through the e-gates with minimal interaction. You’re right that many travelers may not have direct interaction with a customs agent unless there is something specific that requires it, like declaring goods.
Just follow the signs for “UK/EU” or “E-Gates” upon arrival, and you should be good to go. Safe travels! Let me know if you have any other questions!
