Roadtrip in the UK

UK Road Trip Adventure

Hello! I’m planning a road trip around the UK, starting from my home in Cornwall, and I’m eager to explore some beautiful natural landscapes. Ideally, I’d like to complete this journey in a week or less, targeting the latter half of May once I’ve wrapped up my other travels.

I would love any recommendations for scenic routes or must-see natural spots along the way. Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

  1. That sounds like a fantastic adventure! The UK has plenty of stunning natural landscapes to explore. Here’s a suggested route that focuses on some incredible nature spots while keeping your week-long timeline in mind:

Day 1: Cornwall to Dartmoor National Park

    • Distance: Approximately 1-2 hours drive
    • Start your road trip by heading to Dartmoor National Park. Explore its rugged moorlands, granite tors, and beautiful rivers. Take a hike at Haytor or visit the picturesque village of Widecombe-in-the-Moor.

Day 2: Dartmoor to Exmoor National Park

    • Distance: About 1.5 hours drive
    • Head up to Exmoor, where you can enjoy stunning coastal views, sweeping moorlands, and the scenic valleys of the River Exe. Check out Lynton and Lynmouth, and if time allows, take the cliff railway for spectacular views.

Day 3: Exmoor to the Brecon Beacons National Park

    • Distance: Approximately 2-3 hours drive
    • Next, make your way to Wales and explore the Brecon Beacons. You can hike up Pen y Fan, the highest peak in South Wales, or explore the beautiful waterfalls at Henrhyd Falls and Sgwd Gwladys.

Day 4: Brecon Beacons to Snowdonia National Park

    • Distance: About 2 hours drive
    • Travel to Snowdonia, where you can tackle Mount Snowdon (via the Llanberis Path for views or take the Snowdon Mountain Railway). There are also many beautiful lakes and valleys to explore.

Day 5: Snowdonia to the Lake District

    • Distance: Approximately 2-3 hours drive
    • Make your way to the Lake District, known for its stunning lakes and mountains. Consider staying in Windermere or Keswick and enjoy hiking, boating, or just soaking in the breathtaking views.

Day 6: Lake District to the Yorkshire Dales National Park

    • Distance: About 1.5 hours drive
    • Drive to the Yorkshire Dales for more scenic beauty. Explore charming villages like Settle or Hawes, and take in the rolling hills and impressive limestone scenery. Don’t miss the iconic Malham Cove.

Day 7: Yorkshire Dales back to Cornwall

    • Distance: Approximately 6-7 hours drive
    • Depending on your time and energy, you might want to stop at a few places along the way back. Consider a detour to visit Bath for its beautiful architecture and Roman history or check out the Cotswolds for some picturesque villages.

    Tips:

    • Make sure to check the weather and trail conditions, especially for mountain hikes.
    • Bring a camera to capture the breathtaking scenery!
    • Consider booking accommodations in advance, especially in popular areas.

This route offers a mix of moorlands, mountains, and stunning coastlines, giving you a well-rounded experience of UK nature. Enjoy your road trip!
