Scotland Highlands Iteneray Question

Itinerary Question for the Scottish Highlands
Hello everyone,
I’m in the process of finalizing my trip to Scotland for late May and could use some advice on the last segment of my journey. After spending three days in Edinburgh, I’ll be driving to Skye through Glencoe and spending three nights there.
Originally, my plan was to return to the mainland and travel north along the coast. However, I’m now considering taking the ferry to Lewis and Harris for three nights, then ferrying back to Ullapool. This would only leave us two days to get back to Edinburgh.
Would you suggest making the trip to Lewis and Harris, or should I stick with my original plan of exploring the mainland coast?
Thank you!
That sounds like an amazing trip! Both options have their advantages, so it really comes down to your priorities and what you’d like to see.
If you choose to go to Lewis and Harris, you’ll get to experience the stunning landscapes, beautiful beaches like Luskentyre, and unique culture of the Outer Hebrides. Just keep in mind that the ferry crossing and travel time will eat into your schedule, making that portion of your trip a bit rushed, especially with only two days to get back to Edinburgh.
On the other hand, sticking to the original plan of driving along the mainland coast offers a more continuous travel experience, allowing you to explore places like Ullapool, Assynt, and possibly even the North Coast 500 route. This way, you can take your time and enjoy the dramatic scenery without the pressure of catching ferries.
Ultimately, if you feel drawn to the Outer Hebrides and don’t mind the quick turnaround back to Edinburgh, it could be worth it! But if you prefer a more relaxed journey with the chance to soak in the mainland attractions, sticking to your original route may be best. Just factor in how much travel time you’re comfortable with. Whichever you decide, you’re sure to have a fantastic time in Scotland!
