Travel Snacks

Hi everyone! This subreddit has been incredibly helpful as we plan our family trip for late summer. My husband, our toddler, and I will be spending 2-3 weeks exploring Ireland and England, and we’re from the US. One of our favorite activities when traveling internationally is visiting grocery stores and convenience shops to discover unique foods and snacks that we can’t find back home. I’d love to get some recommendations on must-try items! We’ll also be enjoying picnic-style lunches in parks, so I’m looking for toddler-friendly snacks as well. My husband enjoys spicy snacks, and we don’t have any dietary restrictions. Thank you in advance for your suggestions!

  1. That sounds like an amazing trip! Both Ireland and England have some fantastic snack options to try. Here are some must-try items you should keep an eye out for:

    Ireland:

    1. Tayto Crisps – A classic Irish snack, these potato chips are available in a variety of flavors. The cheese & onion is particularly famous!
    2. Irish Clotted Cream – Perfect for spreading on scones or enjoying with fresh fruit during your picnics.
    3. Barmbrack – A traditional Irish fruitcake, it can be a great sweet snack for your toddler.
    4. Brown Bread – The whole grain fiber in Irish brown bread is super healthy, and it pairs well with cheese.
    5. Puff Pastry Sausage Rolls – These savory treats are a hit with kids and adults alike.

    England:

    1. Walkers Crisps – Similar to Tayto but with different flavors, including prawn cocktail, which is unique to the UK.
    2. Marmite – This might be an acquired taste, but try it on toast; it’s a classic for a reason!
    3. Jaffa Cakes – A delightful combination of chocolate, orange, and cake that your toddler will love.
    4. Scones with Jam and Cream – Perfect for a picnic, they’re a sweet treat that’s traditional in England.
    5. Pork Pies – Another savory option, portable and easy to enjoy in a picnic setting.

    Toddler Friendly Snacks:

    • Fruit Pouches – Many brands offer fruit purees that are easy for toddlers to manage.
    • Cheese Strings or Babybel – Great for a protein boost and easy to eat.
    • Rice Cakes or Breadsticks – Perfect for little hands and a good crunchy snack.
    • Biscuit Bars – Look for small, individually wrapped biscuit bars for an easy treat.

    Spicy Snacks:

    • Spicy Kettle Chips – These might be a hit with your husband if he enjoys that kick.
    • Chili Peanuts or Spiced Nuts – These can be found in many shops and are great for snacking.

Make sure to check out local markets as well—sometimes they have unique, regional snacks that are perfect for picnics. Have a fantastic trip, and enjoy all the culinary delights along the way!
