An unexpected free day between Moreton-in-Marsh and LHR

I’ve found myself with an unexpected free day after my Cotswolds tour, which wraps up on Saturday evening in Moreton-in-Marsh. Originally, I planned to head straight to an airport hotel for an early morning flight. However, my flight schedule has changed to a 7:30 pm departure, giving me the chance to explore a bit before heading to London Heathrow.

I’m considering visiting either Oxford or Windsor. My ideal Saturday would involve taking a train or bus to one of these destinations, enjoying a nice dinner, and then booking a hotel where I can stash my backpack for the day on Sunday before my flight. I’m interested in history, outdoor activities, art, and architecture, but I’d also be up for a relaxing spa day if that’s an option. Any suggestions for a fun way to spend my day?

  1. That sounds like a fantastic opportunity to explore a bit more of England! Both Oxford and Windsor are great choices, each offering a unique experience.

    Oxford:
History and Architecture: Oxford is renowned for its stunning colleges and rich history. You can spend time wandering around the University of Oxford, visiting iconic spots like the Radcliffe Camera and Christ Church College. The Bodleian Library is also worth a visit if you’re into history and architecture.
Outdoors: If the weather permits, consider taking a stroll in the University Parks or along the River Cherwell. You could even hire a punt for a bit of fun on the water.
Dining and Accommodation: There are plenty of great restaurants around. For a cozy meal, try The Eagle and Child, which has a great literary history. For hotels, look for places near the city center, making it easy for you to drop off your bag the next day before heading to the airport.

    Windsor:
History: Windsor is home to Windsor Castle, one of the oldest and largest inhabited castles in the world. You can tour the State Apartments and St George’s Chapel, absorbing the rich history.
Outdoors: Take a walk around Windsor Great Park for some beautiful scenery and possibly catch a glimpse of the Long Walk leading up to the castle. It’s a lovely area for a leisurely stroll.
Dining and Accommodation: There are several lovely restaurants around Windsor. For a nice dinner, consider Crown & Cushion or The George Inn. Look for nearby hotels or even a country house hotel for a relaxing stay.

Spa Day Option: If you’re leaning towards a more relaxing experience, consider a spa hotel in either Oxford or Windsor. Some places offer day spa packages if you want to unwind with treatments before your departure.

In summary, if you prefer a more academically enriched experience with beautiful outdoor spaces, I’d recommend Oxford. If royal history and a picturesque town atmosphere appeal to you more, then Windsor would be the way to go. Whatever you choose, you’ll have a lovely day before your flight!
