Getting to LCY

Traveling to LCY

When we visit London, we prefer using the Underground for our journeys, unless our destination is within a walkable distance of a kilometer or two. We’re planning a trip from the Westminster area, specifically St James’s Park station, to London City Airport. It seems that we’ll need to combine the District Line and the Docklands Light Railway (DLR) for our journey, but they intersect at multiple points.

I have a few questions:

  1. Do Oyster cards work on the DLR?
  2. Which is the best station along the District Line for a transfer?
  3. Are there any alternative routes we should consider?

Thanks for your help!

  1. Hi there!

Traveling from St James’s Park to London City Airport (LCY) is quite straightforward. Here are the answers to your questions:

    1. Oyster Cards on the DLR: Yes, Oyster cards do work on the Docklands Light Railway (DLR), so you can use your Oyster card to pay for your journey from St James’s Park to LCY.

    2. Best Stop to Change: The best place to change lines is at Tower Gateway Station if you’re taking the District Line toward Tower Hill. From Tower Gateway, you can catch the DLR directly to London City Airport. Alternatively, you can change at Westminster, then go to Embankment to catch the Circle Line to Tower Hill.

    3. Different Option: Another option would be to take the District Line to Bank and transfer onto the DLR there. This might be a bit easier for navigating as Bank has clearer directional signs for DLR trains towards London City Airport.

Hope this helps, and have a great trip!
