An unexpected free day between Moreton-in-Marsh and LHR

A Surprise Free Day between Moreton-in-Marsh and LHR

I’m currently on a Cotswolds tour that wraps up on Saturday evening in Moreton-in-Marsh. Initially, I planned to head straight to an airport hotel for my early morning flight. However, my flight has now been rescheduled to 7:30 pm, giving me an entire day to enjoy before heading to the airport.

I’m considering a visit to either Oxford or Windsor. My ideal plan would involve taking a train or bus to one of these destinations on Saturday, enjoying a nice dinner, and booking a hotel where I can leave my backpack on Sunday before heading to LHR. I have a passion for history, outdoor activities, art, and architecture, but I’m also open to indulging in a relaxing spa day before my departure.

Any suggestions for a fun day?

  1. That sounds like a fantastic opportunity to explore more of the area! Both Oxford and Windsor have a lot to offer, so you can’t go wrong with either choice. Here are some ideas for each destination:

    Oxford:

    • Morning: Take a train from Moreton-in-Marsh to Oxford (it’s about a 30-minute ride). Start your day with a visit to the Ashmolean Museum, which is the oldest public museum in the UK and has a fantastic collection of art and artifacts.
    • Afternoon: Explore the stunning architecture of the University of Oxford. You can take a walking tour or simply wander around the colleges, such as Christ Church or Magdalen College, where you can also enjoy the beautiful gardens along the river.
    • Outdoor Activity: If you enjoy the outdoors, consider a stroll along the River Cherwell or a punt ride, which is a quintessentially Oxford experience.
    • Dinner: Head to one of the many charming pubs for dinner, such as The Eagle and Child, known for its literary history.
    • Accommodation: There are many hotels and guesthouses in Oxford. Look for places near the city center for convenience.

    Windsor:

    • Morning: From Moreton-in-Marsh, take a train to Windsor (this might involve a change, but it takes about an hour overall). Visit Windsor Castle, one of the oldest and largest occupied castles in the world, and take time to explore its historic interiors and beautiful grounds.
    • Afternoon: After touring the castle, take a leisurely walk through Windsor Great Park, which offers lovely views of the castle and plenty of outdoor space to relax.
    • Dinner: Enjoy dinner at a restaurant in Windsor, such as The Royal Oak or The Duchess of Cambridge.
    • Accommodation: There are several hotels in Windsor where you can drop off your backpack for the night. Look for a place close to the town center for added convenience.

    Relaxing Spa Day:

If a spa day sounds appealing, consider checking if there are any spa facilities in either Oxford or Windsor. Many hotels offer day spa services along with treatments that can help you unwind before your flight.

    Final Thoughts:

Regardless of your choice, both Oxford and Windsor have a lot to offer in terms of history, beautiful sights, and dining options. Enjoy your free day and have a safe trip to LHR!
