Highlands 5 day trip

Highlands 5-Day Trip Planning
Hello everyone! I’m excited to share that I’m planning a 6-day trip to the Highlands. We can either fly into Glasgow or Aberdeen and will be renting a car for the journey, which will conclude in Edinburgh. This will be my first time in Scotland, and we want to make sure we see all the major attractions.
Which airport do you think is a better starting point?
I would really appreciate any suggestions on possible routes. We’re hoping to spend 2 nights on the Isle of Skye as well! Thank you in advance!
That sounds like an exciting trip! Both Glasgow and Aberdeen are great options to start your journey, but flying into Glasgow is generally more convenient for a Highlands road trip, especially as you’ll be ending your trip in Edinburgh. Glasgow has better connections, more attractions, and it’s closer to many key locations in the Highlands.
Here’s a possible route you could take over your 6-day trip:
Day 1: Glasgow to Fort William
– Drive to Fort William (about 2.5 hours).
– Explore the town and take in views of Ben Nevis.
– Consider a visit to Glen Nevis or a short hike.
Day 2: Fort William to Isle of Skye
– Drive from Fort William to Skye (around 2.5 hours) via the beautiful Road to the Isles.
– Stop at Eilean Donan Castle en route.
– Arrive in Skye, check into your accommodation. Spend the rest of the day relaxing and enjoying the scenery.
Day 3: Isle of Skye
– Spend the day exploring Skye.
– Must-see attractions include the Fairy Pools, Old Man of Storr, Quiraing, and Dunvegan Castle.
– Consider some local dining options and enjoy the stunning landscapes!
Day 4: Isle of Skye to Inverness
– Drive from Skye to Inverness (about 2.5 hours).
– You might want to stop at Loch Ness and Urquhart Castle along the way.
– In Inverness, explore the city and perhaps visit the battlefields of Culloden or the Clava Cairns.
Day 5: Inverness to Edinburgh
– Drive from Inverness to Edinburgh (approximately 3.5 hours).
– If time allows, you could take a detour to visit the Cairngorms National Park or the historic town of Pitlochry.
– Arrive in Edinburgh, and spend the evening enjoying the city.
Day 6: Edinburgh
– Spend your last day exploring Edinburgh. Visit Edinburgh Castle, the Royal Mile, Holyrood Palace, and hike up Arthur’s Seat for panoramic views.
– Depending on your flight schedule, enjoy a nice farewell meal in the city.
Make sure to check the weather and plan your activities accordingly, as conditions can change quickly in Scotland. Have a fantastic trip!
