Highlands Advice

Highlands Trip Planning

My family and I are heading to Scotland in early July, with our journey beginning in Glasgow and wrapping up in Edinburgh. We’ll be renting a car to explore the Highlands over five nights, and I’ll have my two kids (ages 11 and 13) with me. One highlight for them will definitely be the Jacobite Steam Train!

I’m planning to spend two nights in Glen Coe and three nights in Inverness. While I’d love to visit Skye, it feels a bit too far off our route, and I prefer not to spend all our time driving. Can anyone recommend another town to consider instead? Also, if you have any suggestions for activities to do while we’re there, I’d really appreciate it! I’m aiming to keep it simple with just these two stops. Thanks in advance for your help!

  1. Your trip sounds fantastic! Given your interest in minimizing travel time while still experiencing the beauty of the Highlands, I’d suggest keeping Glen Coe as one of your stops but consider a different town instead of Inverness.

Fort William is a great alternative and would still allow you to enjoy the Jacobite Steam Train. It’s actually the departure point for the train, making it super convenient for you. Plus, you’ll be right at the foot of Ben Nevis, the UK’s highest mountain. Here are a few suggestions of things to do:

    In Glen Coe:

    1. Hiking: There are great trails suitable for families, such as the Glencoe Lochan walk.
    2. Scenic Drives: Enjoy the breathtaking scenery, and stop at viewpoints along the A82 for photo opportunities.
    3. Visitor Centre: The Glencoe Visitor Centre provides insights into the area’s history and geography.

    In Fort William:

    1. Jacobite Steam Train: Book your tickets in advance for a memorable journey through stunning landscapes to Mallaig, with an option for a lunch stop in Mallaig before returning.
    2. Ben Nevis: If your kids are adventurous, you could attempt the shorter walk up to the summit (though be prepared for a challenging hike). Alternatively, there are some easier trails around the base.
    3. Water Sports: Depending on your family’s interests, you could try activities like kayaking or paddleboarding on Loch Linnhe.

    General Advice:

    • History: Check out the nearby Clan Cameron Museum in Achnacarry if you’re interested in Scottish clan history.
    • Wildlife: Keep an eye out for local wildlife; the area is known for deer and various bird species.
    • Weather: Be prepared for unpredictable weather, so pack layers and waterproof clothing.

This way, you can explore beautiful scenery and participate in fun activities without the stress of long drives. Enjoy your trip!
