Travel ideas for UK and Iceland

Travel Inspiration: UK and Iceland

My husband and I are off to the UK this October for two whole weeks of adventure! We’re in our 30s and ready to embrace whatever comes our way.

London and Scotland are on our must-visit list, but we’re open to suggestions. If this were a once-in-a-lifetime trip, what are the absolute must-see attractions and experiences in these areas? Are there other places in the UK we shouldn’t miss?

We’re also considering a stop in Iceland on our way back to the US. Has anyone experienced this? Is it worth it? We’re thinking about spending two nights and seeing the Golden Circle along with a northern lights tour. Would it be worth the extra time and expense to explore Iceland, even if it’s just for a short visit?

  1. That sounds like an amazing trip! Here’s a suggested itinerary and some must-see attractions for your travels in the UK and Iceland:

    UK Itinerary:

    1. London (4-5 days)
    2. Must-See Attractions:
      • The Tower of London and Tower Bridge
      • Buckingham Palace (try to catch the Changing of the Guard)
      • The British Museum (free entry!)
      • Covent Garden for shopping and street performances
      • The West End for a theatre show (book in advance for popular shows)
    3. Unique Experiences:

      • Take a river cruise on the Thames
      • Visit Camden Market for eclectic food and shopping
    4. Scotland (5-6 days)

    5. Edinburgh:
      • Explore the Royal Mile and Edinburgh Castle
      • Hike up Arthur’s Seat for panoramic views of the city
      • Check out the Scotch Whisky Experience
    6. Highlands:
      • Drive through the stunning Scottish Highlands, consider visiting Loch Ness
      • Stop by Glencoe for incredible landscapes
    7. Isle of Skye:

      • If time permits, spend a night on the Isle of Skye for breathtaking scenery and great hiking opportunities.
    8. Additional UK Locations:

    9. Bath: Known for its Roman baths and Georgian architecture
    10. York: A beautiful walled city with a rich history
    11. Liverpool or Manchester: Great for music and cultural experiences, if you’re fans of The Beatles or sports.

    Iceland:

Stopping in Iceland on your way back is highly recommended, even if it’s just for two nights! Here’s why:

    1. Golden Circle Highlights:
    2. Þingvellir National Park: A UNESCO World Heritage Site with unique geological features.
    3. Geysir Geothermal Area: Witness the Strokkur geyser erupt every few minutes.
    4. Gullfoss Waterfall: One of Iceland’s most iconic and stunning waterfalls.

    5. Northern Lights:

    6. October is a good time to see the aurora borealis. Book a tour that takes you out of the city for the best chances of seeing the lights.

    7. Reykjavik:

    8. Spend a day exploring the capital with its vibrant arts scene, great food, and unique architecture, such as Hallgrímskirkja and Harpa Concert Hall.

    9. Relax in a Geothermal Pool: If you have extra time, consider visiting the Blue Lagoon or (your choice) one of the local geothermal pools for a relaxing experience.

    Final Thoughts:
Both the UK and Iceland have so much to offer! Make sure to embrace local experiences, cuisines, and meet people along the way. Since you have two weeks, balancing your time between the cities and natural wonders will create a memorable journey. Happy travels!
