Suggestions for a daytrip from Edinburgh

Day Trip Ideas from Edinburgh

My wife and I are visiting the UK in June, spending 4 days in London and 2.5 days in Edinburgh. We plan to spend 1.5 days exploring Edinburgh itself but are also considering a day trip for the other half of our time. We were initially thinking about a Highlands bus tour with Rabbies, as many have recommended, but a 13-hour excursion feels like quite a commitment given our limited time. We’re eager to enjoy some beautiful scenery outside the city and discover other towns. I’d love to hear your thoughts on these options or any additional suggestions you might have. Thanks!

  1. Stirling: Explore the town and visit the castle. You could also take a bus to Deanston Distillery for a tour.

  2. North Berwick: Enjoy the coastal views, visit Tantallon Castle and take in the sights of Bass Rock.

  3. St Andrews: Wander around this historic town, check out the cathedral and the renowned golf course.

  4. Pentland Hills: Start your adventure at the snow sports center and hike to Caerketton Hill and Allermuir Hill. This option could be a half-day trip, making it a less intensive choice.

Looking forward to your insights!

  1. All of your suggestions are fantastic options for a day trip from Edinburgh, each offering its own unique charm and scenery! Here are some thoughts on each:

    1. Stirling: This is a great choice! Stirling Castle is one of Scotland’s most historically significant sites, and the town itself has a rich history. The bus trip is relatively quick, and after exploring the castle, Deanston Distillery offers a nice touch of Scottish whisky culture. It could make for a balanced day of history and taste.

    2. North Berwick: If you’re looking for coastal scenery, North Berwick is a wonderful option. The beaches are beautiful, and Tantallon Castle provides a stunning backdrop. If you’re lucky, the views of Bass Rock will be a highlight. You can also enjoy some lovely seafood along the coast.

    3. St Andrews: Known primarily for its prestigious university and golf course, St Andrews is also rich in history with its cathedral ruins and charming streets. It’s a picturesque town perfect for strolling and soaking in the atmosphere. It can easily fill a day, especially if you enjoy some golf culture.

    4. Pentland Hills: If you’re up for hiking and prefer a shorter commitment, the Pentland Hills are a fantastic option. The views from Caerketton Hill and Allermuir Hill are stunning, and it’s nice to be so close to nature while still being near the city. This could leave you with time to explore Edinburgh in the afternoon.

    Additional Suggestions:
Roslin Chapel: Just a short bus ride away, this chapel is known for its stunning architecture and mysterious carvings. It’s a compact trip perfect for half a day.
Linlithgow Palace: About 20 miles from Edinburgh, this historical site is beautiful and set by a lovely loch. It provides a mix of history and scenic walking opportunities.

Ultimately, your choice depends on what you’re most interested in. If you want to delve into history, Stirling or St Andrews are ideal. If coastal beauty and relaxation are more what you’re after, North Berwick is excellent. And for a quick nature fix, the Pentland Hills can’t be beat. Enjoy your trip!
