Travel planning help?

Looking for travel planning advice!

Hi everyone! I’m heading to England—and maybe Edinburgh—from the US for about a week over Easter in April.

I’ll be staying in Durham and would love to explore York, Edinburgh, and London as well. With less than 7 days, I want to make the most of my time.

I’m really into literature (I studied English), history (I’m a fan of medieval and early modern podcasts), and nature. Are there any must-see places in these areas that I should include on my itinerary? I’m open to any recommendations you have! Thanks!

  1. That sounds like an exciting trip! With your interests in literature, history, and nature, you’ll find plenty to enjoy in those cities. Here are some recommendations for each location:

    Durham

    • Durham Cathedral: A stunning example of Norman architecture and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Don’t miss the cloisters and the views from the towers.
    • Durham Castle: Explore this historic castle and its architecture, plus learn about its history as a residence and university building.
    • River Wear Walk: Take a stroll along the river; the views of the cathedral and castle are picturesque, especially in spring.

    York

    • York Minster: One of the largest Gothic cathedrals in Northern Europe; the architecture and history are fascinating. Make sure to climb the tower for great views.
    • The Shambles: This medieval street is one of the best-preserved in the country. It’s a charming area for wandering and taking photos.
    • York City Walls: Walk along the medieval walls that encircle the city for a great view of the historical scenery.

    Edinburgh

    • Edinburgh Castle: Dominating the city skyline, this fortress has a rich history and offers incredible views of the city.
    • The Royal Mile: Explore this historic street running through the Old Town, filled with shops, cafes, and historic sites.
    • Arthur’s Seat: If you enjoy nature, hike up this ancient volcano for sweeping views of the city and surrounding landscapes.

    London (if time allows)

    • British Library: Home to an incredible collection of literary works, including original manuscripts by famous authors.
    • The Tower of London: Dive into history here and see the Crown Jewels.
    • Hyde Park or Regent’s Park: Enjoy a leisurely stroll or picnic in one of London’s beautiful parks, especially in springtime.

    General Tips

    • Plan Your Travel: Both York and Edinburgh are accessible by train from Durham. Check train schedules in advance to maximize your time.
    • Consider Day Trips: If you’re tight on time, consider focusing on one city for a day to thoroughly explore rather than cramming in too much.
    • Local Events: Look up any literary or historical events happening during your visit; those can add unique experiences to your trip.

With a week to explore, you can have a fantastic balance of literature, history, and nature. Enjoy your travels!
