London/Scotland with older kids

Exploring London and Scotland with Teenagers
What are some must-do activities for older kids that you would recommend? Conversely, what attractions do you think aren’t worth the hype?

I’m traveling with my 10 and 13-year-olds, and it’s their first trip to the UK. We’ll be there for two weeks in early June, with one scheduled meet-up with friends near Inverness.

  1. That sounds like a fantastic trip! Here are some can’t-miss activities and attractions to consider in London and Scotland, along with a few that some people might find overrated:

    London:

    Can’t Miss Activities:
    1. The Tower of London: This iconic site is full of history, and the kids will love the Crown Jewels and stories of the Beefeaters.
    2. The British Museum: A great way to introduce them to various cultures and history for free! Highlights include the Rosetta Stone and Egyptian mummies.
    3. Harry Potter Studio Tour: If your kids are fans, this is a must! It’s a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at the making of the movies.
    4. London Eye: The views are stunning, and it’s a fun experience for the whole family.
    5. Street Markets: Check out Camden Market or Borough Market for some unique food and shopping options.

    Overrated:
Madame Tussauds: While it can be fun, many find it overpriced and crowded for what it is.
The London Dungeon: It’s a bit of a mixed bag, and some find it underwhelming compared to other historical attractions.

    Scotland:

    Can’t Miss Activities:
    1. Edinburgh Castle: A visit to this historic fortress is a highlight; the views over the city are spectacular.
    2. Loch Ness & Urquhart Castle: While in Inverness, make sure to take a trip to see Loch Ness and explore Urquhart Castle. The scenery is beautiful!
    3. Highland Games (if available): Check if there are any local games happening while you’re there; it’s a fun cultural experience.
    4. Isle of Skye: If you have the time, a trip to Skye for its breathtaking landscapes is well worth it.
    5. The Jacobite Steam Train: A scenic train ride that inspired the Hogwarts Express; it’s a hit with both kids and adults.

    Overrated:
Overly Commercialized Attractions: Some attractions, like the Loch Ness Visitor Centre, can feel a bit tacky compared to the natural beauty of the area.
Some Tourist Shops in Edinburgh: While the Royal Mile has its charm, be cautious of tourist traps that sell overpriced souvenirs.

    Tips:

    • Consider purchasing an Oyster Card for London travel—it will save you money and time on public transport.
    • Make sure to check the weather and dress in layers, as it can change quickly in both locations.

Your boys will have so much to experience and enjoy together! Have a wonderful trip!
