Bath to Alfred’s Tower?

Subject: Day Trip from Bath to Alfred’s Tower
Hello everyone!
I’m looking for the best ways to travel from Bath to Alfred’s Tower for a day trip, while also visiting Stourhead during my visit. I’m trying to keep costs down, but I’ve found that transportation options in that area can be quite limited. I also don’t have access to Uber or similar rideshare services, but I’d appreciate any estimated costs if anyone has that information!
I’m planning to go on the 17th or 18th of March. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks so much!
Hi there! Sounds like a lovely day trip you have planned! Here are a few options to consider for getting from Bath to Alfred’s Tower while keeping budget in mind:
Train and Walk: You could take a train from Bath to Gillingham (Dorset). From Gillingham, it’s about a 4 to 5-mile walk to Alfred’s Tower. Trains can be quite affordable if booked in advance; prices can vary, so check the train schedules on the National Rail website. Be sure to also factor in a walk to Stourhead, which is just a bit further.
Bus: Check if there are any local bus services that run from Bath to the nearest village (like Mere) and then look for connections to Stourhead and Alfred’s Tower. Sometimes, regional bus services can be less frequent, so it’s worth checking the schedule ahead of time.
Cycling: If you’re comfortable with it, renting a bike in Bath might be a fun and flexible option! You can cycle to Alfred’s Tower and enjoy the beautiful countryside along the way. Keep in mind this requires a bit more physical effort and time.
Carpooling or Rideshare: Since you mentioned not having Uber, look into local community boards or groups on social media. Sometimes you can find others going the same way who might be open to sharing travel costs.
Cost Estimates: If you choose to take the train, a return ticket from Bath to Gillingham could cost between £10-£20 depending on the time and how early you book. Walking or cycling won’t cost anything extra aside from any food or entry fees at Stourhead.
Make sure to check the local service schedules for March 17th/18th as there could be seasonal changes! Have a great trip!
