Recommendations for a 3 week UK visit?

Seeking Recommendations for a Three-Week Trip to the UK!

Hi everyone!

Last summer, I embarked on a three-week journey through the UK during my Interrail adventure, and it turned out to be the highlight of my trip across 20 countries. I’m thrilled to plan another three-week visit, potentially next summer or the following one, depending on my wife’s work commitments.

As I work on my itinerary, I would love your suggestions! What are the must-visit places for our next trip?

Here’s some information to guide your recommendations:

  • We’ll be purchasing 1st class Interrail/Britrail tickets.
  • I have a passion for hiking and will be looking for day trip options (no camping gear this time).
  • We enjoy exploring small towns rich in history—whether medieval or industrial.
  • Edinburgh was our favorite large city, and it’s definitely on our list for a repeat visit.
  • We tend to shy away from large cities and nightlife.
  • I haven’t explored Northern Scotland, much of Wales, or Cornwall, and I’d really like to include those areas.
  • Using a base for day trips (like Crewe for Northern Wales) works well for us and offers flexibility.
  • We’re working within a budget (our last three-week trip cost around £1700 per person).
  • Ideally, we’d prefer not to stay in one place for more than three days.
  • Extra points if the journey involves lots of travel on LNER and Avanti West Coast trains!

For reference, here’s a list of places I’ve already visited (including Ireland):

  1. That sounds like an amazing trip, and it’s great to hear you’re planning another adventure in the UK! Based on your preferences, here’s a suggested 3-week itinerary that includes stunning nature, historic small towns, and convenient travel options:

    Week 1: Scotland

    Edinburgh (3 days)
    – Explore the Royal Mile, Edinburgh Castle, and Arthur’s Seat for some fantastic hiking.

    Pitlochry (2 days)
    – Take the train to Pitlochry (great for hiking, with access to the beautiful Ben Vrackie). Enjoy the local distilleries and the town’s charming atmosphere.

    Inverness (2 days)
    – Visit Loch Ness and explore the stunning surroundings like Urquhart Castle. Hike in the nearby Cairngorms or along the Great Glen Way.

    Week 2: Northern Scotland

    Thurso (3 days)
    – Take the train to Thurso and use it as a base for exploring the stunning coastline of Caithness. Visit Dunnet Head, the northernmost point of mainland Britain.

    Orkney Islands (Optional Day Trip)
    – If time permits, consider a day trip to Orkney from Thurso to see Neolithic sites like Skara Brae.

Week 3: North Wales and Cornwall

    Conwy (2 days)
    – Head south to North Wales, where you’ll find the beautiful town of Conwy with its medieval castle and picturesque town walls.

    Llanberis (3 days)
    – Use Llanberis as a base for hiking in Snowdonia National Park. Try climbing Mount Snowdon or enjoy beautiful lakeside walks.

    St Ives, Cornwall (3 days)
    – Finally, make your way to Cornwall. Enjoy the gorgeous beaches and coastal walks. St Ives has a charming harbor and art scene. Explore the nearby coastal path for stunning views.

    Final Travel Suggestions:
    – Make sure to check train schedules, as connections between these destinations can be vital for your itinerary.
    – Look into using LNER and Avanti West Coast for your travel, especially for routes covering Edinburgh to Crewe and further into Wales or Cornwall.

This itinerary allows for plenty of hiking, culture, and history, all while keeping you on track with your preference for small towns and beautiful landscapes. Enjoy planning your trip!
