Sorry- another UK itinerary post!

Title: Seeking Personalized Itinerary for UK Trip!

Hello everyone,

I hope you don’t mind another UK itinerary request! My husband and I are planning a 3-week trip to the UK in June/July, and I thought I’d reach out for some personalized recommendations.

Here’s a bit about our travel plans:
– We’d love to explore Scotland and London, along with some nearby attractions. If time allows, we might also venture into Ireland, but it’s not a must.
– We’re considering taking the train from Edinburgh to London and would like to spend one or two nights in York along the way.
– We’re eager to spend a few nights in the Scottish Highlands and visit Bath as well.
– We’re especially interested in touring locations from “Braveheart” and “Outlander.”
– Nature lookouts, castles, and ancient buildings are right up our alley. We plan to focus on scenic exploration over city sightseeing, so we’re only allotting about three days for London.

Here’s what I’m hoping to get from you all:
– What are the must-see attractions and activities in Edinburgh?
– Would it be better to rent a car for exploring the Scottish Highlands and other remote areas, or is public transport sufficient?
– Are there any day trips you’d recommend instead of York while traveling from Edinburgh to London?

I apologize if I’ve overlooked anything! Feel free to ask any questions—I’m happy to provide more details! Thank you in advance for your help!

  1. Hi there! Your trip sounds amazing, and it’s great that you’re focusing on exploring the beautiful landscapes of the UK. Here are some personalized recommendations for your itinerary:

Must Visits & Things to Do in Edinburgh:

    1. Edinburgh Castle: A must-see, offering stunning views of the city. It’s steeped in history and a key location in the “Outlander” series.
    2. Royal Mile: Stroll along this historic street filled with shops, street performers, and restaurants.
    3. Arthur’s Seat: Hike up this ancient volcano for breathtaking views over Edinburgh and the surrounding hills.
    4. Palace of Holyroodhouse: The official residence of the Queen in Scotland, with beautifully landscaped gardens.
    5. Scottish National Gallery: If you enjoy art, this gallery is home to a fantastic collection, including works by the likes of Van Gogh and Monet.
    6. Greyfriars Bobby: Visit the statue of the famous loyal dog and the nearby cemetery for some history and local lore.

    Transportation to the Scottish Highlands:

    • Renting a Car: This is highly recommended if you want to explore remote areas, as public transport can be limited. Having a car will let you reach stunning spots like Glencoe, Loch Ness, and the Isle of Skye.
    • Public Transport: While it’s viable and offers scenic train journeys, it may restrict your ability to explore off-the-beaten-path locations.

Day Trip Suggestions While Traveling from Edinburgh to London:

    1. Stirling: Visit Stirling Castle and the Wallace Monument, both tied to “Braveheart.” It’s only a short train ride from Edinburgh and offers rich history.
    2. North Berwick: A charming coastal town with beautiful beaches and lovely nature walks. The Bass Rock and the Seabird Centre are highlights.
    3. Alnwick: Home to Alnwick Castle (featured in “Harry Potter” as Hogwarts), it’s about a 2.5-hour train ride from Edinburgh. The gardens are also stunning.
    4. Durham: Known for its UNESCO World Heritage-listed cathedral and castle, Durham is an enchanting city worth a stop.

    Highlights in the Scottish Highlands:

    • Fort William & Ben Nevis: Hike or enjoy the views around the UK’s highest peak.
    • Isle of Skye: Famous for its rugged landscapes and picturesque villages; don’t miss the Fairy Pools and the Old Man of Storr.
    • Inverness: Explore the Loch Ness area and visit Urquhart Castle.

    In Bath:

    • Make sure to visit the Roman Baths and the stunning Georgian architecture of the Royal Crescent. Enjoy a relaxed afternoon walking along the River Avon.

Feel free to ask if you have more specific questions or need further recommendations! Wishing you an unforgettable trip!
