Staying in Conwy using public transportation

Traveling to Conwy via Public Transport

Hi everyone! I’m excited to share that I’ll be embarking on a long-awaited solo trip to Wales during the last week of August. I’ll fly into Manchester on a Tuesday, then spend the week exploring north Wales before catching a train to Edinburgh that Saturday. I’m planning to use Conwy as my base, but I’ve come across some mixed information about the train station there and how convenient it is to travel to and from.

I hear that Conwy is primarily a request stop. Is it correct that while the timetables show regular service, trains will only stop if flagged down or if the conductor is informed? This will be my first experience with this kind of system, as most of my previous train journeys have been abroad. While I can’t check schedules too far in advance, I see that trains to and from Conwy run fairly regularly, and I have some routes planned to get me from the airport and eventually to Edinburgh.

Since I have arthritis, I’d prefer to avoid walking from Llandudno Junction unless absolutely necessary. Any advice or insights you have would be greatly appreciated, as I want to ensure everything flows smoothly before I finalize my daily plans. Thanks so much!

  1. Hello!

Your trip to Wales sounds wonderful, and Conwy is a great choice for a home base! To address your concerns about the train station:

    1. Conwy Train Station: Yes, Conwy is indeed a request stop on some services. This means that trains will only stop if requested. On the train, you can let the conductor know that you want to get off at Conwy, and they’ll make sure to stop there. When you’re boarding from Conwy to go elsewhere, it’s a good idea to notify the conductor as well.

    2. Train Schedules: While it’s true that the timetables can be a bit tricky, there are usually regular trains that stop at Conwy, especially during the week. I recommend checking the official website of the train service or using a rail app closer to your travel date for the most accurate schedule.

    3. Getting to Conwy from Manchester Airport: From Manchester Airport, you can take a train to Llandudno Junction and then a local train or bus to Conwy. Alternatively, there may be direct connections depending on the timing of your arrival.

    4. Accessibility: Since you mentioned having arthritis, I’d recommend checking the accessibility options at the stations. Most stations in the UK are equipped with customer service staff who can assist you on and off the trains.

    5. Exploring with Public Transport: North Wales has a fantastic public transportation system. You can easily visit places like Llandudno, Bangor, and even Anglesey from Conwy using buses and trains. Just plan your days in advance to make the best use of your time.

It sounds like you’re doing your research, which is crucial for smooth travels. Enjoy your trip, and don’t hesitate to ask for help from train staff if you have any mobility concerns on the day! Safe travels!
