Getting around without a car

Traveling Without a Car in the UK
Hi everyone! I’m planning a trip to the UK this July with my 12-year-old daughter, and we have an exciting itinerary lined up. We’ll be spending six days in London, six days in Yorkshire, and two days in Bath before heading back to an airport hotel for our flight home.
I’d love to stay in a quaint village in Yorkshire near the dales, but I’m a bit concerned about getting around without a car. Is it feasible to rely on buses and trains in a more rural area? I’m also contemplating whether renting a car might be the best option, but I must admit I’m a little anxious about driving on the opposite side of the road, especially in London. Renting a car in Bath crossed my mind, but I’m not sure how practical that is.
I would appreciate any advice or insights you may have from your own experiences! Thank you!
Hello! Your trip sounds fantastic, and it’s great that you’re considering the best ways to get around. Traveling without a car in the UK is definitely possible, especially with the excellent public transport options available.
In Yorkshire, many villages and small towns are accessible by bus or train. For example, towns like Harrogate, Skipton, or Settle have good rail links and can serve as good bases for exploring the Dales. You can also find local buses that connect smaller villages. Just check the schedules ahead of time, especially if you plan to visit less touristy areas, as services can be limited.
Renting a car in Bath could be a practical option if you want to explore the more remote areas at your own pace. However, I completely understand your concerns about driving on the other side of the road. If you do decide to rent a car, consider practicing in quieter areas and take it slowly. Alternatively, you could also look at local taxi services for day trips, which might be a comfortable compromise.
Also, don’t hesitate to ask your accommodation for recommendations on transport options—they often have the best local insights. Enjoy your trip, and I’m sure you and your daughter will have a wonderful time exploring the UK!
