Edinburgh to Isle of Skye train route advice

Advice Needed: Train Route from Edinburgh to Isle of Skye
Hello, wonderful community! I’m a Canadian woman embarking on a solo ancestral pilgrimage through the UK this coming May. I’ll be in Edinburgh for Beltane festivities from April 28 to May 4, and I’m eager to visit the Isle of Skye by train afterwards. I’ve noticed that trains are filling up quickly, so I need to decide on a route soon.
Currently, I’m considering traveling from Edinburgh to Inverness, then to Kyle of Lochalsh, and finally taking a bus to Portree, where I’m hoping to find a hostel. If anyone has suggestions for scenic routes that minimize changes, I would greatly appreciate your input! I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed by all the options available.
Additionally, I’d love to hear your thoughts or experiences with tours on Skye, especially to spots like Fairy Glen and Fairy Pools, as well as any recommendations for exploring other nearby islands. As someone who lives on Vancouver Island, I would hate to miss the chance to see more islands during my trip!
After my time on Skye, I’ll be taking the train to Dumfries and Galloway to visit my Hannay Clan’s territory.
Thank you in advance for your advice!
Hi there!
It sounds like you have a wonderful trip planned! Your route from Edinburgh to the Isle of Skye via Inverness is actually a great choice. The scenery along that route is breathtaking, especially as you get closer to the Highlands and the west coast. Here are a few tips to help you with your journey:
Train Route: Your plan of going from Edinburgh to Inverness, then to Kyle of Lochalsh is a popular and scenic route. From Inverness, you can take the train to Kyle of Lochalsh, which will provide you with stunning views. Just be mindful of the train schedules, as they can be limited, especially in the more rural areas.
Bus to Portree: Once you reach Kyle of Lochalsh, you can take a bus to Portree, which is the largest town on the Isle of Skye and a great base for exploring. Make sure to check the bus times in advance, as they can vary.
Exploring Skye: The Fairy Glen and Fairy Pools are both must-see spots on Skye. Other beautiful areas to consider are the Quiraing and Old Man of Storr for breathtaking hikes and views. There are plenty of guided tours that can take you to these locations if you prefer not to drive. Booking a tour can also be a great way to meet fellow travelers.
Other Islands: If you have time, consider visiting the nearby islands like Raasay or even Harris and Lewis, which are stunning with their own unique landscapes and cultures. Ferries from Skye can take you to these islands quite easily.
Journey to Dumfries and Galloway: After your time on Skye, you can catch a train back to Inverness and then connect to your route south to Dumfries and Galloway. It might take a bit of planning, but the scenery along the way will be rewarding.
Remember to book your train tickets in advance, especially since you mentioned that they are already filling up. Enjoy your trip, and I hope your ancestral pilgrimage brings you the connection and experiences you’re seeking!
Safe travels! 🌍✨
