Highlands 5 day trip

5-Day Highlands Adventure

Hello everyone! I’m organizing a 6-day trip to the Highlands of Scotland. We can either fly into Glasgow or Aberdeen and will be renting a car, with our journey concluding in Edinburgh. Since this is my first visit to Scotland, I want to make sure we get to see all the key attractions. Which option do you think is better?

I would appreciate any suggestions for possible routes. We’re especially keen on spending 2 nights on the Isle of Skye. Thank you!

  1. That sounds like an amazing trip! Both Glasgow and Aberdeen have their advantages, but if you’re planning to end your journey in Edinburgh, flying into Glasgow might make the logistics a bit easier since it’s closer to your starting point.

Here’s a suggested 6-day itinerary that includes two nights on the Isle of Skye and covers some major attractions:

    Day 1: Arrival in Glasgow
    – Pick up your rental car and explore Glasgow briefly if time permits. Consider visiting Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum or the Glasgow Cathedral.
    – Stay overnight in Glasgow.

Day 2: Glasgow to Fort William
    – Depart Glasgow early in the morning. Drive to Fort William (about 2.5 hours) via the A82, which offers stunning views of Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park.
    – In Fort William, consider taking the gondola up Ben Nevis (the UK’s highest peak) or exploring Glen Nevis.
    – Stay overnight in Fort William.

Day 3: Fort William to Isle of Skye
    – Drive from Fort William to Skye (about 2 hours). You’ll cross the famous Skye Bridge.
    – Spend the afternoon exploring the island. Don’t miss the Fairy Pools and Portree, the capital of Skye.
    – Stay overnight on Skye.

    Day 4: Explore Skye
    – Dedicate a full day to explore Skye. Recommended highlights include the Old Man of Storr, Quiraing, Neist Point Lighthouse, and maybe a visit to Dunvegan Castle.
    – Enjoy the breathtaking landscapes and the unique charm of Skye.
    – Stay a second night on Skye.

    Day 5: Skye to Edinburgh
    – Depart Skye in the morning and drive towards Edinburgh (about 5 hours). You can take the scenic route via Lochcarron and along the A87 and A85.
    – Stop at Eilean Donan Castle on the way for a photo op.
    – Arrive in Edinburgh in the late afternoon and explore the Royal Mile or visit Edinburgh Castle.
    – Stay overnight in Edinburgh.

    Day 6: Explore Edinburgh
    – Use your final day to explore more of Edinburgh. Consider visiting Arthur’s Seat for stunning views of the city, the Palace of Holyroodhouse, and the Scottish Parliament.
    – Depending on your flight time, you might have some extra time for shopping or a last meal in this beautiful city.

This itinerary gives you a good mix of natural beauty and cultural experiences while making the most of your time in Scotland. Make sure to book accommodations in advance, especially on Skye, as it can get busy. Enjoy your trip!
