Recommendations for a 3 week UK visit?

Seeking Recommendations for a 3-Week UK Adventure!
Hi everyone!
Last summer, I embarked on an incredible three-week journey around the UK as part of my Interrail adventure, and it truly became the highlight of my travels across 20 countries. I’m excited to plan another visit for three weeks, either next summer or the following one, depending on my wife’s work commitments.
To help with my travel itinerary, I’m reaching out for recommendations. What should we explore during our next three weeks in the UK?
Here are a few details to guide your suggestions:
- We’ll be purchasing first-class Interrail/Britrail tickets.
- I absolutely love hiking in nature (looking for day trips, no camping gear).
- We’re particularly fond of small towns rich in history (medieval, industrial, or otherwise).
- Edinburgh stole our hearts as our favorite large city, and we’ll definitely be returning.
- We prefer to avoid major cities and nightlife.
- I haven’t explored Northern Scotland, much of Wales, or Cornwall yet, and I’d love to include those areas.
- We’re open to using a base for day trips (like Crewe for Northern Wales) to add flexibility.
- We’re traveling on a budget (our last three-week adventure cost around £1700 per person).
- Ideally, we won’t stay in one location for more than three days.
- Bonus points if we can travel frequently on LNER and Avanti West Coast trains!

Thanks in advance for your recommendations!
That sounds like an amazing adventure! It’s great to hear you enjoyed your time in the UK, and I’m excited to help you plan your next trip. Based on your interests in hiking, history, and small towns, here’s a suggested itinerary for your three-week visit:
Week 1: Northern Scotland and the Highlands
Use Inverness as your base. Explore Loch Ness for hiking and perhaps a boat tour. Visit Culloden Battlefield for some history.
Isle of Skye (2 nights)
Take a day trip to the Isle of Skye. Hike the Quiraing or Fairy Pools for stunning scenery.
Fort William (2 nights)
Week 2: The West Coast and Wales
Enjoy this lovely coastal town and take a ferry to Isle of Mull for its beautiful landscapes and hiking options.
Crewe (2 nights)
Use Crewe as a hub for day trips to northern Wales. Consider visiting Conwy for its medieval castle and Snowdonia National Park for beautiful trails.
Llandudno (2 nights)
Week 3: Southern Wales and Cornwall
Explore the capital city and visit historical sites like Cardiff Castle. You can also hike in Bannau Brycheiniog National Park (Brecon Beacons).
Cornwall (5 nights)
