Where to rent car in Edinburgh as an American driving in the UK for the first time?

Looking for Car Rental Advice in Edinburgh for First-Time American Drivers

Hi everyone,

My family and I are planning a trip to the UK this fall, and part of our journey includes renting a car in Edinburgh to explore the Highlands. Since I’ve never driven on the left side of the road before, I’m curious whether it’s easier to rent a car on the outskirts of the city rather than within Edinburgh itself. Is navigating out of the city challenging for someone in my situation?

Ideally, I’d prefer to rent a car in the city since we’ll be staying there for a few nights, but I’m open to taking an Uber to a different pickup location if that’s the best option.

Thanks for your help!

  1. Hello!

That sounds like a fantastic trip! Renting a car in Edinburgh is definitely doable, and there are a few options to consider:

    1. Renting in the City: There are several rental companies located in Edinburgh city center, which is convenient for your stay. Places like Hertz, Enterprise, and Sixt have offices in the city. Just keep an eye out for pedestrian zones and one-way streets, which can be a bit tricky, but if you’re comfortable with driving in the city, this should work well.

    2. Driving Out of Edinburgh: Leaving the city can seem daunting at first, especially with the different road rules, but most rental companies provide a GPS which can help greatly. A key tip is to plan your route ahead of time so you’re familiar with the roads. Starting your drive during off-peak hours can make it easier too.

    3. Picking Up Outside the City: If you’d prefer to avoid city driving altogether, renting a car from an airport location (like Edinburgh Airport) might be a good option. You could take an Uber to the airport and pick up your car there. This would give you the chance to get used to driving while navigating less crowded roads.

    4. Practice Makes Perfect: If possible, consider taking a short drive on less busy streets in the city first or even practicing in a nearby parking lot before heading out on longer journeys.

Enjoy your time in Scotland, and have fun exploring the Highlands! Safe travels!
