Getting to LCY

Traveling to London City Airport (LCY)

When we travel to and from London, we usually prefer the Underground, unless our destination is within a kilometer or two that we can walk. We’re looking to get to London City Airport from the Westminster area, specifically St. James’s Park station. It seems like we can take a combination of the District Line and the Docklands Light Railway (DLR), but I’m unsure where the two lines intersect.

  1. Do Oyster cards work on the DLR?

  2. What’s the best station along the District Line for the transfer?

  3. Are there any other options we should consider?

Thanks in advance!

  1. Hi there!

Getting from St James’s Park to London City Airport (LCY) using the Underground is a convenient option. Here are the answers to your questions:

    1. Will the Oyster cards work on the DRL?
Yes, Oyster cards are accepted on the Docklands Light Railway (DLR). You can use your Oyster card to travel to and from London City Airport without any issues.

    2. What’s the best stop along the District Line to change?
The best stop to change from the District Line to the DLR would be Tower Gateway station. You can take the District Line to Tower Hill and then transfer to the DLR at Tower Gateway. Alternatively, you can also go to Canary Wharf or Shadwell for easier access to the DLR.

    3. Is there a different option?
As an alternative, you could take the Jubilee Line from Westminster to Canning Town, then change to the DLR there for a direct route to London City Airport. This option can be a bit more straightforward and may save you some time.

Safe travels, and enjoy your time in London!
