Massive monthlong itinerary for differing preferences

Comprehensive Month-Long Itinerary for Varied Interests

I initially tried to create a table for our plans, but it turned into a bit of a mess!

My husband and I are in the process of planning a month-long trip to the UK and Ireland, relying entirely on public transportation. For the first two weeks, we require accommodations with strong internet access, and we want to design an itinerary that forms a large loop without retracing our steps.

I’ve never organized a trip longer than a week, and this will be my first visit to the UK and Europe, so it feels quite overwhelming!

We both enjoy scenic landscapes, history, architecture, and science—though his focus leans more toward geopolitics while I’m drawn to the domestic side. We aim for a balanced mix of busy and relaxed activities.

My interests include food, comedy, Jane Austen, beautiful train journeys, and gardens, while he is passionate about cricket, tennis, walking, and finding great deals.

Given that we’re on the West Coast of the US, the time difference is substantial, too!

He’s particularly excited about visiting York, while I can’t wait to explore the Cotswolds.

We aren’t interested in nightlife or drinking but appreciate a blend of urban and rural experiences. We’ll need accommodations with air conditioning (not our proudest admission), and we plan to utilize free nights at Hyatt or Hilton properties whenever we can.

I’ve realized my friend in Ireland might be quite busy, so I’m contemplating skipping Dublin and focusing on the UK. Perhaps I can explore Wales, Oban, or another destination instead?

Here’s a rough draft of our itinerary:

  • 7 Days in London (including day trips to the south and east)
  • 3 Days in York (with a stop in Cambridge on the way)
  • 3 Days in Edinburgh
  • 2 Days in Glasgow, then a budget flight to Dublin
  • 3 Days in Dublin (including day trips), then take a ferry to Holyhead, and possibly stay in Chester or Manchester
  • 3 Days in the Cotswolds
  • 1 Day in Bath
  • 4 Additional Days in London before departure

I would love any suggestions or feedback on this plan!

  1. Your itinerary sounds like a fantastic adventure, and it’s great that you’re considering a mix of cities and countryside! Here are some suggestions and adjustments based on your interests:

    First Two Weeks (Stable Base)

Since you need reliable internet for the first two weeks, consider staying in a city like London or Edinburgh. Both places have excellent public transit, and you’ll have access to a wide variety of activities and day trips.

    Revised Itinerary:

    1. Days 1-7: London
    2. Spend the first 7 days exploring London and taking day trips to places like:
      • Windsor Castle (a mix of history and architecture)
      • Oxford or Cambridge (great for history and beautiful architecture)
      • Kew Gardens (perfect for your love of gardens)
    3. You can also catch a comedy show while you’re in London for some laughs!

    4. Days 8-10: York

    5. Travel to York (1.5-2 hours by train from London), which your husband is excited about.
    6. While in York, make sure to visit the York Minster and take a stroll along the city walls.

    7. Days 11-13: Edinburgh

    8. Take the train to Edinburgh (about 2.5-3 hours from York).
    9. Explore historical sites like Edinburgh Castle and enjoy some beautiful walks up Arthur’s Seat.
    10. You might also consider a day trip to St Andrews, especially for its tennis history.

    11. Days 14-15: Glasgow

    12. It’s a quick train ride from Edinburgh (about an hour).
    13. Glasgow has amazing architecture and museums to explore.

    14. Days 16-18: Dublin

    15. Fly from Glasgow to Dublin (budget flights available).
    16. While in Dublin, consider visiting the Book of Kells at Trinity College and take a day trip to Howth for scenic coastal views.

    Considering Ireland vs. Wales

If your friend in Ireland is likely to be busy and you’re contemplating skipping Dublin, consider heading to Wales instead. You could base yourself in Cardiff, which has great transit connections and beautiful places like Cardiff Castle and nearby Brecon Beacons for stunning nature walks.

    Chester or Manchester

    • Chester offers a picturesque mix of city life and beautiful scenery, with its city walls and Roman history.
    • Manchester has more urban offerings, including museums, music scenes, and shopping.

    Cotswolds and Bath

    1. Days 19-21: Cotswolds
    2. After your time in Dublin (or Cardiff), head to the Cotswolds. Stay in a town like Stow-on-the-Wold or Cirencester, both ideal for exploring the stunning countryside.

    3. Day 22: Bath

    4. A day trip from the Cotswolds to Bath is perfect for seeing the Roman Baths and Georgian architecture.

    5. Days 23-26: Back to London

    6. Return to London for your final days. Use this time to visit any remaining spots you want to see or take a last-minute day trip.

    Final Thoughts

    • Make sure to book your accommodations early, especially if you intend to use points for Hyatt or Hilton properties.
    • Given the extensive travel, consider getting a UK rail pass for flexibility.
    • Embrace the mix of both bustling city life and serene countryside as you explore the UK and Ireland!

Best of luck with your trip planning! Your adventure is sure to be unforgettable!
