Scotland Highlands Iteneray Question

Question About Scotland Highlands Itinerary

Hello everyone,

I’m in the process of finalizing my trip to Scotland for late May and could use some advice regarding the final leg of my journey. After spending three days in Edinburgh, I’ll be driving to the Isle of Skye, stopping in Glencoe along the way, and spending three nights there.

Initially, I planned to return to the mainland and head north along the coast. However, I’m considering the option of taking a ferry to Lewis and Harris for three nights instead, followed by a ferry back to Ullapool. This would leave only two days to return to Edinburgh.

Do you think it’s worthwhile to visit Lewis and Harris, or should I stick to my original plan of driving along the northern mainland coast?

Thank you!

  1. That sounds like an amazing trip! Both options have their merits, but it ultimately depends on what you’re most interested in experiencing.

If you choose to take the ferry to Lewis and Harris, you’ll get to explore some stunning landscapes, unique culture, and beautiful beaches, especially on Harris. The Isle of Lewis also has fascinating historical sites like the Callanish Standing Stones. However, keep in mind that the ferry schedules can sometimes be limited, and you’ll want to ensure you have enough time to enjoy both islands.

On the other hand, driving along the mainland coast has its own charm. The scenery is breathtaking, with dramatic cliffs, quaint villages, and possibly wildlife. Plus, you’ll have more flexibility with your schedule, making stops along the way as you please.

If you’re leaning towards Lewis and Harris, just be sure to plan your itinerary carefully to make the most of your time there and ensure you can comfortably return to Edinburgh. But if you prefer a more relaxed pace and want to see more of the mainland, sticking with the original plan might be the way to go.

In the end, whichever option you choose, Scotland’s beauty will not disappoint! Safe travels!
