Good areas to stay in North East England with Access to York, Vindolanda, Beamish and Newcastle?

Best Places to Stay in North East England for Easy Access to York, Vindolanda, Beamish, and Newcastle?

Hello everyone,

I’m planning a trip this summer that includes a stop in Newcastle as I travel through Scotland and Northern England.

My goal is to use Newcastle as a base to visit Vindolanda, Beamish, and York, while also exploring the city itself. However, I’m having some difficulty finding a nice hotel that accommodates two adults and two children—preferably one with multiple beds. It seems that there is a limited selection of major brand hotels near the Central Train Station in Newcastle.

Here are some options I’ve considered:
The Sandman looks great due to its configuration of two bunk beds and two regular beds. However, I’ve read some reviews indicating that the facilities are getting a bit outdated. Plus, I think they’re a Canadian brand, which is a nice touch.
Staybridge Inn seems appealing but is located a bit far from the central station. I’ve also heard that the sofa bed is quite small and may not work well for our kids.
Sleepzzz is very conveniently located near the central station, but the rooms might be too cramped.
Roomzzz aparthotel is fully booked.
Travelodge could be a good option, but I’m hesitant about their pre-payment requirement, especially with the unpredictable exchange rates from the US-Canada trade situation.

I would ideally love to find an aparthotel like Alcor’s Adigo, as that would be perfect for our needs.

Are there any other cities in the region with good train connections to the north that you would recommend, particularly with more budget-friendly hotel options?

After Newcastle, I’ll be heading to Inverness and then back down to Edinburgh before flying home.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

  1. Hi there!

It sounds like you have an exciting trip planned! Based on your itinerary and the places you want to visit, there are a few suggestions that might work for your family.

    1. Durham: It’s a charming city with excellent train connections to Newcastle and York. You can easily visit Beamish and Vindolanda from here. Plus, there are several family-friendly accommodations, including some good hotels and guesthouses. Check out the Durham Marriott Hotel Royal County, which often has larger family rooms.

    2. Sunderland: Just a short train ride from Newcastle, Sunderland could be a good option. You’ll find a few family-friendly hotels like the Ramada by Wyndham which offers spacious rooms. It’s also close to attractions like the National Glass Centre and Roker Beach.

    3. Middlesbrough: This city is slightly further south but has decent train connections to both Newcastle and York. The Jurys Inn or the Holiday Inn Express could cater to your family size comfortably.

    4. Newcastle Areas: If you’re keen on staying in Newcastle, consider neighborhoods like Quayside or Ouseburn. They have more boutique hotels and serviced apartments with family arrangements. You might want to look into Hampton by Hilton Newcastle—it’s relatively new and offers family rooms.

    5. Alnwick: While a bit further away, it’s a beautiful town and can be considered if you’re interested in exploring the north. The Alnwick Castle and nearby beaches can be fun for the kids. There are several B&Bs and smaller hotels here, but you’d be reliant on your car for train access to other locations.

All these locations provide great access to public transportation and are family-friendly. Given your concerns about hotel facilities and payment options, I’d recommend checking for family room availability at these places as well as looking into booking directly with the hotels, as they sometimes offer flexible payment options.

Safe travels, and enjoy your trip!
