First time flying solo from Gatwick to central London

Hi everyone! I’m flying into Gatwick tomorrow morning and I need some advice on the easiest way to get to the city. I’ll be staying near London City Airport, and since this is my first time traveling to London alone, I’m feeling a bit anxious about the whole process. I would really appreciate any tips on how to get from the airport to my accommodation!

Also, I’ll be arriving at the North Terminal and I’m a bit confused about how to find the shuttle bus to the South Terminal for the train. Any guidance would be incredibly helpful! Thank you!

  1. Hi there! It sounds like an exciting trip! Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you get from Gatwick to London City Airport.

    1. Arrival at Gatwick North Terminal: Once you arrive, follow the signs to baggage claim (if you have checked luggage) and then the exit.

    2. Getting to the Train Station: The Gatwick train station is located beneath the airport. You can follow the signs that say “Train” or “Gatwick Express.”

    3. Shuttle Bus to South Terminal: Since you’re arriving at North Terminal, you will need to take the shuttle bus to South Terminal. The shuttle bus departs regularly and is free. Look for signs for the shuttle bus or ask airport staff for help if you’re unsure.

    4. Train from Gatwick to London: Once you reach the South Terminal, you can take the Thameslink or Gatwick Express train into central London. Thameslink is generally more economical. If you take Thameslink, you’ll want to get off at London Bridge, St Pancras, or Blackfriars, and from there you can transfer to the Underground or DLR to get closer to London City Airport.

    5. Getting to London City Airport: From the stations mentioned, you can make your way to the DLR (Docklands Light Railway) from Tower Gateway or Poplar, which will take you directly to London City Airport.

    6. Ticket Information: Consider getting an Oyster card or a contactless payment card for travel around London. It will make fares cheaper than paper tickets.

    7. Extra Tips: If you’re anxious about traveling on your own, try to allow plenty of time for each step of your journey. Don’t hesitate to ask airport or train staff for help if you feel lost at any point.

Safe travels! Enjoy your time in London!
