An unexpected free day between Moreton-in-Marsh and LHR

I suddenly have a free day between Moreton-in-Marsh and LHR!

I’m currently on a tour of the Cotswolds that wraps up Saturday evening in Moreton-in-Marsh. Initially, I planned to head straight to an airport hotel for my early morning flight the next day. However, my flight has now been changed to 7:30 p.m., giving me a whole day to explore before I need to head to the airport.

I’m considering a visit to either Oxford or Windsor. Ideally, I’d like to take the train or bus somewhere on Saturday, enjoy dinner, and find a hotel to store my backpack on Sunday before making my way to LHR. I’m passionate about history, love outdoor adventures, art, and architecture—and I wouldn’t mind indulging in a relaxing spa day before I leave either.

Any suggestions for a fantastic day out?

  1. That sounds like a lovely plan to fill your unexpected free day! Both Oxford and Windsor have their own unique charms, so you can’t go wrong with either choice. Here are some suggestions for each option:

    Oxford:

    • Activities: Explore the stunning architecture of the University of Oxford. Don’t miss the Bodleian Library, Radcliffe Camera, and Christ Church College, which is also famous for its connection to Harry Potter. You could also take a leisurely stroll along the River Thames or the University Parks for some outdoor time.
    • Art: Visit the Ashmolean Museum, which offers a fantastic collection of art and archaeology, including works by famous artists.
    • Transportation: Oxford is easily accessible by train from Moreton-in-Marsh, and the journey offers lovely countryside views.
    • Dinner: For dinner, consider heading to one of the many charming pubs or restaurants in the city center, such as The Eagle and Child or The Old Bookshelf.
    • Accommodation: There are plenty of hotels ranging from budget to upscale options. Look for places with easy access to the train station for your airport trip.

    Windsor:

    • Activities: Visit Windsor Castle, one of the oldest and largest inhabited castles in the world and a must-see for history lovers. The town itself has a charming vibe with some lovely streets to wander.
    • Outdoors: Take a stroll through Windsor Great Park, where you can enjoy beautiful landscaped gardens and views of the castle from different angles.
    • Dining: There are numerous eateries in Windsor, from classic pubs to restaurants. Consider The Royal Luncheon or The Duchess of Cambridge pub for a cozy meal.
    • Spa Day: If you’re leaning towards a relaxing spa day, there are spa options in the area, such as the Macdonald Windsor Hotel Spa, where you could unwind after a day of exploring.
    • Transportation: Windsor is also reachable by train, but it typically requires a change at Slough or other nearby stations.

    Conclusion:

Both destinations are rich in history, architecture, and outdoor opportunities. If you prefer a more academic and cultural atmosphere, Oxford might be the better choice. If you’d like to enjoy royal heritage and relax in a charming town, Windsor may be more fitting. Whichever you choose, you’re sure to have a delightful day before heading to the airport! Enjoy your trip!
