Day Trip and Dining Recommendations for Bath

Hi everyone! My partner and I, both in our mid-20s, are excited to be visiting Bath from London for four days this April. We’ll be arriving by train late Friday morning and leaving Monday evening, giving us two full days and two mostly-full days to explore. We’ll be relying solely on public transport during our stay.

I have a few questions where I could use your advice:

  1. We’re considering a day trip for one of our full days, as I’m not sure if there’s enough to fill four days in Bath (but feel free to convince me otherwise!). We enjoy pubs, shopping, and exploring castles and historical sites. We’re also up for cycling, hiking, or other outdoor activities. We were thinking about Wells, Bristol, or Bradford on Avon as potential day trip destinations. Do you think Stonehenge is worth a visit?

  2. What are your must-try restaurants and cocktail bars in Bath? We’ve already made reservations at Beckford Canteen and the Scallop Shell, but we’d love more recommendations. 😊

  3. Any suggestions for nightlife or fun date night activities during our evenings? We enjoy activity bars, jazz venues, and clubs back in London, so any tips would be appreciated!

Thanks so much for your help!

  1. Sounds like a fantastic trip! Bath has a lot to offer, and you’ve got some great questions. Here are my thoughts on each:

    1. Day Trip Recommendations:
    2. Bristol: Definitely a great option! It’s just a short train ride away and has plenty to explore—check out the vibrant Harbourside, visit the Clifton Suspension Bridge, and explore the street art, especially Banksy’s work. There are also fun pubs and places to shop.
    3. Wells: Known for its stunning cathedral and charming streets, Wells is a lovely day trip. You can explore the historic center, visit the Bishop’s Palace, and maybe grab lunch at one of the quaint cafés or pubs.
    4. Bradford-on-Avon: A picturesque town along the River Avon with beautiful architecture and walking paths. A leisurely day here can include a walk along the river and a visit to the trendy pubs.
    5. Stonehenge: While it’s iconic and worth seeing, keep in mind it requires a bit more planning and travel time. If you’re really interested in history, it could be worth it, but it may take up most of your day.
    6. Given your interests, it sounds like Bristol might be the best bet for a mix of activities.

    7. Restaurant and Cocktail Bar Recommendations:

    8. The Raven: A fantastic spot for hearty pub fare and great craft beer.
    9. Sotto Sotto: A lovely Italian restaurant for a romantic dinner.
    10. The Circus Restaurant: Known for its seasonal menu and great atmosphere.
    11. For cocktails, try The Dark Horse or The Botanical Garden for a unique experience with creative drinks. The Book Shop Bistro also has a cozy vibe and good cocktail selection.

    12. Nightlife and Evening Activities:

    13. Komedia: A venue that hosts everything from live comedy to club nights. Check their schedule for special events during your stay.
    14. Jazz at The Forum: If you’re into jazz, this might be a great place to catch some live music.
    15. For a fun night out, consider Lucky Strike for bowling and cocktails, or try your hand at The Escape Hunt for a group escape room experience.
    16. If you’re looking for a lively pub scene, head to The Bell or The Pig & Fiddle for a more local vibe.

Overall, I think you’ll have plenty to enjoy in Bath and the surrounding area. Have a fantastic trip!
